Sheep Eyeball & Pig Heart Dissections

Students worked in groups of 6 to dissect pig and sheep hearts.

The project provided Lumpkin County Middle School’s 7th-grade science students with a hands-on learning experience through the dissection of pig hearts and sheep eyeballs during the Human Body Systems unit. Approximately 262 students participated, working in small groups to examine organ structures and better understand how cells form tissues, tissues form organs, and organs function together within body systems. The dissections reinforced Georgia Standards of Excellence by helping students compare different organ systems and explore how they interact to sustain life. Grant funding of $951.06 supported the purchase of the specimens and supplies, allowing students to engage in a memorable, real-world scientific investigation that deepened their understanding of anatomy and physiology.
